For Christmas, my girlfriend and I gave her brother a life-size, cardboard cut out of “The Most Interesting Man in the World.”
If you don’t know who that is, he’s the Dos Equis beer marketing figure, the one who says,
“I don’t always drink beer, but when I do, I drink Dos Equis.”
These commercials have become so popular that you find that figure of speech everywhere.
So what if the most interesting man in the world were actually an audio engineer. And taking it even further, what if he just didn’t really know anything about audio.
He’d probably say something like,
“I don’t always EQ, but when I do, I boost with a narrow Q.”
“I don’t always compress, but when I do, I make sure the ratio is 1:1.”
“I don’t always mic the hi-hat, but when I do, I turn it down in the mix.”
“I don’t always record acoustic guitar, but when I do, I mic up the sound-hole.”
“I don’t always master my mixes, but when I do, I just slap a limiter on and call it a day.”
“I don’t always use reverb, but when I do, I use it as an insert.”
“I don’t always mix in mono, but when I do, I just turn off one speaker.”
“I don’t always use EQ, but when I do, I use it as a send effect.”
“I don’t always acoustic treatment, but when I do, I use old egg cartons.”
Do you have any smart quotes like that up your sleeve? Let us know in the comments!
