The Evolution of the Music Industry from 1980 – 2010

music business

I stumbled upon this graph when I was bored and was probably supposed to be doing something else. It shows the evolution of how we’ve consumed music over the last 30 years.

You can clearly see how the LP and cassette dominated the market to begin with. Slowly the CD took over and was the dominant format of which we listened to music. Up until 2005 it was almost the only format we used, but then the long tail took over and all these other different ways of experiencing music took over.

The mobile era gave us easy subscription and streaming on our phones, downloads ate up its share of the pie and LPs actually had a minor resurgence.
