In order to create those great mixes, we’ve got to have good studio monitors.
Whether you’ve been in the business for years, or just got your first pair yesterday, chances are you have a specific preference or bias towards certain kinds of studio monitors.
So I ask you:
What kind of monitors are you using?
In my bedroom studio I’m using the first generation of KRK Rokit 8. They’re big, full range monitors that work great for my small home recording studio.
I also use the facilities of Allusion Studios when I need to do some serious mixing or mastering. There I have the pleasure of using a pair of Focal Twin6, a really high-end set of studio monitors.
What about you? What monitors are you currently using in your studio?

Dynaudio BM5a MKII’s … love em. They deserve a better room though.
Agreed, I love my BM5′s
Alesis M1 520.
Happy camper Adam A7 user here. Very clear and crisp.
Quested S8R’s. I’m absolutely in love with them! And a pair of cheap SoundKing MT500 (5″) to check mixes against.
Thanks for the comments guys! I’m happy everybody loves their monitors

Par of Dynaudio BM6a with a Tannoy Ts112 sub.
I’m using a pair of KRK 5′s with mopads. They work and sound great
Similar to me. I’m using the 8′s, also with Mopads for better monitoring.
Focal CMS 65 & CMS 40, Genelec 6010 (for writing on the road).

Honestly, I don’t have a set of monitors. I mix in headphones… Audio-Technica ATH-M40fs headphones. I’m quite happy with these as they sound great and have a fantastic level of detail. I’ve never mixed with monitors, though… so I might not know what I’m missing.
Well, when you mix with headphones you take the “room” out of the mixing equation. So you will make mixes that don’t take the acoustics of the human ear listening to a song in a room. This could mean you make mixes that have more reverb, or less low end. I’m not saying you can’t mix without monitors, it’s just not ideal if you want to know how your finished product sounds through speakers.

Our guy here was raised on Mackie MR5s but when they walked with the last equipment owner I bought some Rockit 5 G2s which he didn’t agree with, so in the end he got his own HS50Ms and I’ve bought some Alesis M520 M1s as backup and for my little tinkering (equipment owner, not engineer). The Mackies did by far have the most bark for heavy metal but that’s not what near fields are for, right?
I don’t see why near fields aren’t good for metal?
he wants to hear Ear Bleeding levels of volume as well
for that we have the PV215s normally!
Agreed.
I’ve got a pair of Adam A7, and I’ve gotta say, I’m very pleased with the sound.
Yamaha HS80′s here. Amazing response, maybe a little compression when I set it too loud. But I definitely like it!
Dynaudio BM6A MKII. Terrific.
Same here as my main monitors…Could use a hair more low end for the bass heavy EDM I do but can’t complain one bit overall. These sit along side of 2 more pairs of monitors as well as about a $100 set of computer speakers and a beat to hell, really crappy pair of old computer speakers. I’m a monitor nut!
But I hope to be able to pick up some focal twins before the end of next year!
KRK Rokit 6 G2′s… Yellow ones…
They sound fine and seem to be ok, but I’ve not had the luxury of trying different brands. My room is small, treated well, but still a small room. I’ve used these for two years and am used to the way they sound. I’d love to compare some others. Even considered getting some more expensive ones, but haven’t yet.
3 sets, Yamaha HS 80′s, (with a Mackie 10″ Sub)
HS 50′s and a pair of Avatone Mixcubes.
Depending on the intended primary playback medium
of the audio these three systems provide a wide spectrum.
In my part of the world the Avatones are quite useful
when checking audio for use on TV, YouTube and laptop mixes.
Pair of Genelec 8020
I’m using a pair of Samson R8a
But i don’t use them much, i’m recovering GAS addict
I’m using Yamaha HS50′s and then listen on Logitech computer speakers to hear the “CAR” kind of sound.
Event 20/20′s
I use a pair of Genlec 8040
Im looking to buy some monitors soon. Are the M-Audio BX5 models good and accurate? Its either those or the Rokit 5′s. Please advise.
I’ve had the BX5s. I really liked them, and I’m currently using a pair of Rrokit 8′s that are really good. It’s just a matter of listening to them if you can. If you’re buying them online you can’t really do a comparison, although I would maybe advise going with the KRKs.
M-Audio Studiophile AV 40
I have these as well, and I really like them. I started out with them and had them for around 3 years before I upgraded to Rokit 6′s. I still use the AV40 for a secondary set that I’ll listen back on. They still sound great.
Main monitors are Dynaudio BM6a matched with a modded Tannoy TS112 sub woofer.
Secondary are a pair of Yamaha NS-10 powered by a Lab Gruppen amp.
