We just published a web app to calculate the duration of a voice over script. If you need to estimate the duration of a narration, ebook, speech, or other monologue, you can use this tool:

Sounds like your preamps don't have enough gain, in the interfaces. Dynamics usually need a lot more gain than condensers, and that's why you were told you needed one. You can get cheap condenser mics that work well, and if you're doing podcasting work Blue Microphones have pretty good USB mics for that purpose. It is strange that the M-Audio Firewire doesn't have enough gain though so I'm not entirely sure what the problem could be.

I have an EV RN27 dynamic cardioid microphone with an M-Audio USB. I never get the levels I need and wind up having to amplify or normalize what I have to record. On top of that, with or without the amplification, I get hiss. I also have another M-Audio Firewire Solo. I don't get the volume level with that either. There isn't as much hiss, but the sound is tinny. I have an HP Pavillion with a realtek hi def sound card. I have the same problem with the levels no matter which of the two interfaces I use. I have heard I won't get the levels I need unless I use a condenser mike. Is there a way to get my levels up without having to switch mikes? Should I add a mixer to use as an amp, or is does that bring with it more noise?
