Creating Separation Between Piano and Upright Bass With Side-chain Multi-band Compression

If you’re looking for a couple of different ways to create separation between your instruments, this week’s video is for you.

John Martin’s jazz-trio song, Engelenhart was a fun tune to work on and I discovered an alternative way to create separation between the piano and the upright bass in the lower-mids.

Sometimes when two instruments are playing together in the same register, you’ll get too much build-up down there and this time I used an advanced side-chaining technique to clear the muddiness so that the two instruments could play nicely together.

Watch the video for the details, and if you’re looking for more tricks and creating separation between your instruments and balance in your mixes, EQ Strategies – Your Ultimate Guide to EQ is your next step.

If you’re one of the thousands of students who have already taken the EQ Strategies course, I’d love to hear from you and know how it helped you improve your mixes.

Have a great weekend,
