Why Elton John got the arrangement backwards and the engineering wrong but still made it work
You might be confused about what exactly you’ll get out of taking the Music Production Strategies course.
And I understand. It’s not as technical and straightforward as learning to EQ a kick drum or compress a vocal.
The technical engineering aspects are a little simpler to grasp.
Because music, man music is made in so many ways.
Which might be the reason why I didn’t make a course based on how to EQ a kick drum.
I made the course to teach you multiple ways to approach your productions, irregardless (not a word) of how you want your kick drum to sound.
I mean, I make a point to mention the tom sound in Elton John’s “Yellow Brick Road.”
They sound distorted. If heard in isolation someone might even say “ugh…what an amateur recording.”
But they’d miss the point.
Because the song is still amazing and there are so many things you can learn from it.
For instance, did you realize that the arrangement when it comes to the chorus is kind of backwards?
If you’re unsure what I’m talking about, take a listen to the song here below:
The chorus is usually the big loud part of the song. It’s the big payoff that gets stuck in your head.
In “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” it’s actually pretty quiet.
Not because there’s nothing going on, but because of the arrangements around the chorus that make it relatively quieter.
That’s what makes Music Production Strategies different than the technical production courses.
It doesn’t only go into the production side of it, but also the song structure and arrangement. I believe you can’t only be good at one of those things to be a proficient producer.
You need to be well versed in all three.
