Good Cop, Bad Baby

Sometimes I feel like I’m living with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

The only difference is that she’s a cute one-year-old baby with no knowledge of science.

One minute she’s really loving and giving you big hugs. The next moment she turns around and slaps you in the face because she can’t handle the unbearable lightness of being anymore.

I’m constantly walking on eggshells around her, except these eggshells come from Fisher-Price and make me yelp so loud that the dog runs into the room worried that somebody stepped on my tail.

She flips from one emotional extreme to another so quickly it’s like she’s wearing both Greek masks of tragedy and comedy at the same time.

It’s kind of how we feel as creatives. One day we’re pumped about what we’re working on. We’ve found our flow and we’re in the zone, convinced that this is our best work yet.

The next day IT’S ALL GARBAGE!

This is normal because it’s all part of our emotional cycle of change.

We start off optimistic and excited about the new thing we’re doing.

Then as we realize the new thing is maybe a little harder than we thought and we haven’t found success immediately, the negative thoughts start to creep in.

And in act three of our emotional roller coaster of a one-person play, tragedy strikes and we realize:

• “This is terrible”
• “What am I doing with my life!”
• “Who am I to do this. Who was I kidding?”
• “GARBAGE!”

Or…all of the above in no particular order.

And if you stay there you’re bound to keep paying the price of the emotional roller coaster because you won’t ever get off.

You’ll only find success when you have the self-awareness to realize you can push through.

So if you’re a creative person, you’re going to have to make a decision.

Do you ride the roller coaster over and over again until you get sick of all the unfinished projects you have?

Or do you buy a one-way ticket to the end and push through to success?

The choice is yours and you’re the only person who can make it for you.
