Why Your Session Should Be Done Before You Even Hit Record
I’m flying to Guadalajara, Mexico in a month to produce an album with a friend of mine.
I’m betting it’ll be a lot of fun, but it’s also a little stressful.
Not in the scary sort of way but rather the exciting kind of way.
Enter the Importance of Pre-Production
You see, we’re going to try to record the whole band live. They have a really cool live feel and I want to capture all of that. We’ll probably do some overdubs but it’s all going to be about the live performance.
And the only way that’ll work is if I spend a lot of time planning and thinking things through in the pre-production phase.
Basically, half of my work will be done before I even get on the plane. I know all the equipment we have so I’ll mentally prepare for it before I even get to the studio. Sure, things might not work out exactly like I planned it in my head but it’s easier to modify plans you’ve thought through than to come up with a brand new one on the spot.
That’s why pre-production is so important. It makes the rest of the recording process so much smoother.
Doing the whole album live will definitely be a challenge. We also don’t have all the time in the world so it’s even more challenging. But I’m confident that with the proper planning and pre-production we’ll end up with a kick-ass sounding record.
I’m thinking about some ways I can document the process to share with you, an inside look into recording process with me.
Enter The Production Club
But until then you can check out Joe Gilder’s Production Club 2.0 if you want some in-depth training into the whole production process. He’s a firm believer in pre-production as well. So much so that he spends two whole weeks just on that.
And if you didn’t already know, you can get it for $297 off until tonight, midnight central time.
When was the last time you saved $297 on anything, let alone something that’s guaranteed to help you improve your recordings.
