3 Steps to a Sweet Solo Sound That Won’t Clutter Up Your Mix
Here’s a simple trick for a cool solo sound I came across the other day.
I was working with a brass solo but I’m thinking it would work real well on anything, especially a kick-ass guitar solo.
Here’s what you do:
1. Stereo
Start by sending your solo to an aux bus where you insert a stereo spread.
I used the Waves Doubler but use whatever you like.
2. Tape Delay
Immediately after the stereo spread put a tape delay with around 100 ms and only about one repeat. I wasn’t looking for a lot of feedback and one repeat adds enough delay to make it stand out while not getting in the way.
3. Reverb
If you’re not necessarily looking for a “delay” solo sound then the trick is to add a short reverb after the delay to diffuse and create space without the delay drawing attention to itself. And because you use a small room or a short reverb of some sort you won’t make the solo sound too reverbed either.
Then simply mix the solo bus underneath your solo and you’re good to go. You could even slap an EQ on there to filter out the highs or the lows depending on what your song calls for.
There you have it
Instant diffuse solo space that doesn’t clutter up your mix.
If you liked that, I’m confident you’ll love the tips and tricks you’ll find inside the Recording & Mixing Strategies Bundle.
