5 Easy Mixing Tricks You Can Implement Right Now for Better Mixes

Here are a few things I’ve been doing in my mixes lately.

I thought I’d share them with you in case they spark some ideas for you.

1. I’ve been using delays as inserts instead of sends. Put them at 10-15% wet and set the delay really short, from between 1/64th – 1/8th to create micro depth on your tracks.
2. If you want your choruses to hit harder, consider automating some parallel mix compression to the choruses only.
3. When I’m lazy and want results fast, I cheat on my stock plug-ins with easy Waves plug-ins like Greg Wells MixCentric or CLA Vocals.
4. In order to hear what the compressor is doing to a track, I take the time to solo my tracks to really hear how the compressor shapes the envelope.
5. To get that high-end knock that you hear in hip-hop, I’ve started duplicating the sampled kicks with additional high-end layers that help the beat cut through on small speakers.
