An Advanced Vocal Delay Trick You Should Know

If you want to add a bunch of delay to your vocal but don’t want it to clutter up the source vocal track, this week’s mix video is for you.

By using a compressor that’s side-chained to the vocal, you can control the delay in a very musical way.

One of the producer’s references was the song I Quit by Cashmere Cat featuring Ariana Grande, and I tried to recreate some of the vocal effects I was hearing on her voice.

Check it out:

It is actually quite the coincidence that I made a vocal production video this week because my buddy Lij Shaw over at Recording Studio Rockstars is offering a sneak preview into his Ultimate Mixing Masterclass with Grammy award-winning engineer Craig Alvin where they walk you through his step by step process he uses every time to mix great sounding records.

The class doesn’t start until next week, but if you click on the Free Preview link on this page, you can access the free Vocal Production course that’s part of the larger webinar series they’re doing next week, as well as Lij Shaw’s podcast interview with Craig where he walks you through his process.

The free 3 Steps to a Pro Vocal Mix course includes:

  1. How to effectively comp vocals to manage multiple takes easily and efficiently. This will transform your vocals from sounding amateur to rock solid.
  2. Discover the system for tuning vocals quickly and accurately without sounding like a robot (unless you want to!). This will help your mix sound great in top Spotify and iTunes playlists.
  3. How to use the power of gain staging before your plugins so that your vocals sound consistently full and your listeners neven miss a lyric! This is the final step in preparing your vocal tracks for a pro mix.

This last step Lij released yesterday and I wanted to make sure you could access the entire course before I sent it to you. However, I know for a fact that he will be taking the free preview away on Sunday so make sure you check it out now. And…if you’re ready to learn all about Craig Alvin’s ultimate mixing process, there are still spots available for you.

Get the free course and interview with Craig Alvin when you click the Free Preview link on this page.

Here’s what you will learn from Craig in the Ultimate Mixing Masterclass:

  • How to use Craig’s professional step by step mix system in your studio.
  • How to create your own mix template for drums, bass, guitars, keys, vocals, and set up the most effective gain structure.
  • Get your mixing questions answered by a Grammy-winning engineer. Ask anything you want during the webinar.
  • Craig will stream high-quality audio to your home studio so you can listen to the monitors that you are familiar with.
  • We will teach using Pro Tools, but this system will work in any DAW you use.
  • Discover the process for making sure your mixes are powerful, punchy, and clear no matter what style of music you are mixing.
  • You won’t believe how much better your mixes will sound when you use this step by step pro mixing method!
  • Send in your questions in advance or ask them during the webinar, and there will be a replay so you can come back to watch this again anytime.

The Masterclass starts next Saturday, but check out the details and the free previews into the course here.

Enjoy and have a great weekend,

Björgvin
