How Rocking Out on EQ is Like Learning a Searing Lead Guitar Solo
Back when I was starting to learn guitar I couldn’t understand the concept of scales.
I thought: “Eric Clapton didn’t need no music theory and neither will I”
What a dumb kid I was.
I didn’t want to learn music theory and what notes were in a scale because I didn’t understand how it would help me.
I just looked at it like another chore. Like musical math homework.
Little did I know that scales are literally the best way to learn how to solo.
Knowing your way around the guitar through scales is like having a roadmap. Scales tell you exactly where to play if you want to sound good.
It’s like a cheat sheet really.
Once I got that concept into my stubborn boy brain my guitar playing improved immensely.
I finally understood why scales were so important. It wasn’t just music math. It was like having a superpower.
The EQ spectrum is much the same way.
It’s a bunch of frequencies and sounds that you can’t figure out.
But each frequency has a sound that over time you’ll start to recognize. And once you do you’ll slowly start putting those numbers to sounds and a roadmap will appear in your head. You might think that you can just slap some presets on and mix that way. Sure, that will give you a good start but knowing what frequencies sound like is the exact same thing as knowing where all the good notes are on the guitar.
It makes your EQ’ing easier.
I had posters of all these different scales on the walls that I followed every time I practiced my solos. After a while those scales were burned into my hands. My fingers knew exactly where to go and I could easily figure out the key and scale of a song whenever I wanted to solo.
You learn the same thing with EQ. It comes with practicing your ears but it’s good to have a starting point that tells you what all those frequencies sound like.
That’s where The Ultimate Guide to EQ(www.audio-issues.com/ultimate-guide-eq) comes in.
It’s an in-depth overview of EQ hat helps you learn exactly what all those frequencies sound like.
Look at it like a scale-chart blueprint that helps you EQ like a rockstar guitar player.
