When To Use Saturation to DULL Down Your Electric Guitars (And Big Announcement!)

Yesterday I promised you a quick saturation tip to use on harsh electric guitars.

As you should know by now, saturation is the fifth plug-in in my five plug-in series that I think are the most important to master to make an awesome sounding mix.

Saturation does a lot of cool things:

  • Thickens up kick drums
  • Adds edginess to snare
  • Adds secret sauce to the vocals
  • Dulls down the guitars…

Huh? Dulls down the guitars? How’s that helpful at all?

When To Use Saturation Instead of EQ

Sometimes, saturation can actually help tame some of the higher frequencies. So instead of using EQ, you can slap on a saturation plug-in instead.

It’ll help you tame those higher frequencies on harsh sounding electric guitars (wiry Stratocasters spring to mind) while also giving you some smooth tape or tube saturation to add some nice harmonic content to your sound. It’s a richer solution than just an EQ cut and your mix will get more out of it.
