GIRATS!

I was a panelist at the Independent Film Arizona monthly meeting recently.

The subject was sound so a friend of mine tagged me to speak about sound and offer some advice to filmmakers who want to produce better sound for their films.

Now, I don’t know a lot about on-location film audio but as a part of the panel I could offer some good advice when it comes to recording audio.

And it all simply comes down to one thing.

GIRATS!

No, that’s not an exclamation of pain or annoyance. It’s the mantra you should live by.

Get. It. Right. At. The Source.

See, it doesn’t matter whether you’re recording a dialog for a film, a rock band or a 50 piece orchestra. It all comes down to getting it right at the source.

Because, like I told everyone yesterday, having a great source sound makes everything so much easier.

There’s no need to fix it in the mix if you’ve gotten a great source sound. Take a little more time to begin with, experiment with mic positions, dampening the acoustic around you if needed and test a few different microphones.

A little extra time in the beginning can cut hours off your mixing. You’ll end up with a better sounding product and the best part is?

It’ll actually be fun!

You won’t need to tear your hair out in frustration because your source sound is noisy/boomy/muddy/etc. You’ll simply have something that you can enhance and make it even better than it ever was.
