Good Enough

I taught a Music Accelerator to about 25 students this week as a part of the TENWEST Impact Festival.

I am very grateful for the opportunity to share my experience and story to help musicians make a bigger impact with their music career.

One of the big take-aways the attendees told me was my “Good Enough Rule.”

It’s the sentence that slays perfectionism:

Good enough is good enough until you’re good enough to be better.

Take your mixing skills for example. Instead of wasting hours to perfect your mix to that elusive mirage of 100% it’s better to just get to 80% and call it a day. Release the song and move on.

Your next 80% will probably be a bit better than your last 80% and soon enough, with enough mixes under your belt, your 80% will crush your past self’s perfectionism.

Good enough is good enough until you’re good enough to be better.

It’s why I advocate simplicity when you’re starting out. Just focus on the 20% of the plug-ins you need to get 80% of the results.

Then release and move on.

If you focus on:

  • Compression
  • Reverb
  • EQ
  • Delay
  • Saturation

Then you got mad CREDS to carry on (special thanks to Rob Cerasuolo for bringing that bad-ass acronym to my attention).

And if you need to learn your CREDS, then head on over to my Mixing With 5 Plug-ins course to get started!
