How Subway’s Menu System Is A Sign of an Amateur Mix
I have a love/hate relationship with Subway.
The sandwich place, not the public transportation system.
On one hand, they’re great for lunch and they’re cheap.
On the other, I feel an epileptic shock coming on when I go into their store.
They have so many different recipes, offers, discounts, and meal deals you can choose that you don’t even know where to look.
Sometimes I try to scramble to find the sub of the month but it’s so carefully hidden in plain sight with all the other million offers that I’m usually slackjawed and confused when it’s my time to order.
So I always get the same thing.
But while I was waiting in line it made me think about creating interest in your mixes.
Create Focus in Your Mixes
If you’re constantly making every instrument jump out at the listeners, they won’t know where to put their attention.
Some instruments belong in the background, creating a foundation for the lead instruments. Rhythm instruments should play a supporting part as well to complement the vocal, but you can bring them out during instrumental parts when they become the focal point of the mix.
But pushing everything to the front so that you’re forced to pay attention to everything at once.
That just causes headaches.
Usually, it’s about the vocal. I like my vocal up-front and center. The main attention grabber.
Just like I like the “Sub of the Month” to be featured prominently in the middle of the store. I don’t want to go searching for the deal they’re trying to offer you.
And you shouldn’t make your listener listen hard for the vocal, or any other lead instrument for that matter.
Find the lead instrument and emphasize it. Then make the other instruments complement it.
It’s as simple as that.
