Performance Trumps Gear, Any Day of the Year

The other day I got hit with this amazing realization.

I was rearranging the living room and reconnecting my TV to the internet. I don’t watch network TV. I just watch what I want through Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus and Netflix. I hate commercials and bad network TV programming so the freedom to choose what you want to watch when you want to watch it is liberating to me.

Anyways,

I was moving the TV to the other side of the room and I had to line the internet cable along the wall so it wouldn’t be in the way.

As I was fixing this tiny copper cable to the wall it hit me.

This tiny wire is responsible for my whole TV experience.

This small, copper cable has all my favorite TV shows and any movie I want to watch on demand.

Think about it.

Isn’t that CRAZY!

Heisenberg, Don Draper, Louis C.K., Spiderman and all the rom-coms my girlfriend can dream of jump through this wire onto our television set.

It just makes me in awe of technology. That something so terribly insignificant as a copper cable can bring me such great things.

As Long as the Performance is Perfect, Any Old Gear Will Suffice

It’s the same thing with your productions.

It doesn’t matter what gear you use as long as you have an awesome performance.

Only got a simple Shure Sm58 but an amazing singer? The performance will outshine your lack of gear any day.

Cheap microphones don’t matter as long as an impeccable performance.

Like Slau said when I interviewed him for the Strategies books(www.audio-issues.com/strategies):

“It’s just globally true that the most important thing is the performance…Really, much lower down on the priority list is the gear.”

The performance is key. Even if you just have cheap equipment, a real artist will always shine through any old cable.

The trick is to know what to do with that equipment in order to capture that spectacular performance.
