Tell us your name, age and where you live.
Aaron Parkin, 24, Sydney Australia
How did you get interested in audio engineering and music production?
While playing the guitar during the end of year music exams, the PA system was consistently causing feedback and just sounded terrible.
I was really upset that the school PA operators had no clue on how to run the equipment. I decided to join the PA crew and study the working of the PA system and my love of sound recording and mixing grew. From there my interests has evolved from live sound to studio operations.
Where are you studying audio now and what will you diploma/degree be
in?
I am nearing the end of studying the Bachelor of Creative Technology (Audio Engineering and Sound Production) at JMC Academy in Sydney. Because it is a large academy, you get the opportunity to work alongside other students studying other creative industries. Working with the Film & has been a great experience.
What’s the most challenging thing about music production and engineering?
The most challenging part of any music production, is conveying the sonic image you hear into reality. It can be true for the other way around.
What’s the most entertaining aspect of working with audio and music?
The best part of recording musicians, is easily their attitude when the final mix is presented to them. I love seeing the artists dance and jump around in the control to their own music, high fiving each other. It makes all the hard work and the long hours worth it.
What are your plans after graduation?
In the near future I plan on undertaking a certificate in adult learning. Gaining the certificate will allow me to host community based workshops in sound production.
The students will gain a basic understanding in sound production and the workshops will also cater for people that would like to record themselves at home, but have no previous knowledge of home recording.
Anything else you would like to add?
I am currently running a community based recording studio. The studio is completely not for profit and provides an affordable way for musicians to get a professional recording.
