Advanced Sound System Tuning for Live Sound Engineers [Free Videos]
Are you interested in learning sound system tuning, but don’t have the time or resources to attend an in-person seminar?
Nathan Lively is here to help. You may remember him from some recent posts: 6 Soundcheck Tips on How to Get the Band to Play at the Right Level and How to Get Good Data From Audio Analyzers.
Now he’s back with some great new videos that are all part of a free 40-part series called Get Started with Sound System Tuning, which is designed to get you up and running with your first measurements in Smaart or SATlive. And here’s the best part: You can do it for free or cheap with components you already own.
Here are the two most popular videos to give you a taste:

Just another reason why you don’t need an expensive measurement microphone to get started with sound system tuning.
Stop Smaarting the Sound System
Smaarting the sound system has turned into a bad word. It refers to a quick and easy sound system tuning procedure that can ruin your show.
Here’s how to Smaart the sound system:
- Buy audio analyzer software.
- Don’t practice at home.
- Take a single measurement of the combined system at FOH with 1/3oct smoothing.
- Insert 50 EQ filters to make the trace appear flat.
- Don’t use your ears. Base all of your decisions on the graph.
